This digital painting poster illustrates the lifecycle of Amanita Muscaria, a fascinating and visually stunning mushroom that, despite its beauty, is toxic and should not be consumed. Known for its hallucinogenic compounds and other adverse effects, this species became the focal point of my project.
Research
In conducting my research, I focused on exploring various types of fungi found in the forest. I was particularly drawn to the fly agaric mushroom, captivated by its bright red caps—its beauty conceals its toxicity.
After conducting an environmental search, I delved deeper into primary and secondary research using databases to understand the mushroom’s lifecycle stages, including how its spores disperse and develop during reproduction. I was especially fascinated by the intricate microscopic processes involved in its life cycle. From there, I knew I wanted to visually highlight both the macro and micro aspects of this mushroom in my poster.

Ideation
I envisioned a circular layout to guide viewers through the lifecycle, from mature mushroom to microscopic stages and back. The design depicted spore release, fertilization, and development through egg and button stages.
To enhance depth and uniqueness, I employed 3D modelling techniques, creating original interpretations of the mushroom’s forms at various growth stages.

Design
I focused on creating a visually striking circular composition that showcased both macro and micro stages of the Amanita muscaria’s development.
The design was centered around the mushroom’s iconic red cap with white spots, which served as a focal point and instantly recognizable feature.
I carefully selected a palette of earth tones to complement the vibrant red, creating a harmonious balance that reflected the mushroom’s natural woodland habitat.

keep fix change
The journey of this artwork began early in the year but took an unexpected turn after its initial phase. Originally conceived as a 3D modelling poster, the project was temporarily shelved. Midyear, I revisited the concept with a fresh perspective, completely transforming it into a fully rendered digital painting that vividly depicts the mushroom’s lifecycle.
new design
In my new vision, I imagined the mushroom illuminated by moonlight in a decaying forest, highlighting its symbiotic relationship with the tree roots. I minimized the text to let the images speak for themselves as much as possible.
The journey of this poster, from its initial prototype to the final illustration, showcases not only the development of my technical skills but also my capacity to adapt and refine a creative concept over time.
